What does "opting out" of credit offers mean?

You can remove your name from any list compiled by a credit reporting agency that can be resold and used for pre-approved credit offers, including credit cards. This action is referred to as "opting out." To opt out, call the toll-free number: (888) 5OPTOUT or (888) 567-8688. This number can be used to remove your name from all three agencies. You may also phone go online to receive opting out instructions given by each agency.

Every day your mailbox contains another interesting offer of credit or merchandise, such as catalogs, vacations, or credit cards. Shopping by mail gives you numerous choices and opportunities. However, while millions of Americans welcome these choices, others prefer not to receive such mailings.

You may choose to exclude your name from CRA (Credit Reporting Agency) lists for unsolicited credit and insurance offers. Creditors and insurers may use file information as the basis for sending you unsolicited offers of credit or insurance. Such offers must include a toll-free phone number for you to call if you want your name and address removed from future lists. If you call, you may select to have your name removed for five years or permanently. If you select the option for permanent removal, you will be mailed a Notice of Election to Opt Out form to complete and return. The toll-free number for all of the national CRAs is 1 888 5OPTOUT (1 888 567 8688.)
